Fortunately, no other employees were reportedly harmed during this incident. However, it is clear that the potential for violence exists within any workplace setting—especially healthcare settings.

Healthcare Workplace Violence In The Past

In recent months, workplace violence against a nurse has been on the rise – an alarmingly disturbing trend that needs to be addressed.

On December 1st, 2022, a 33-year-old man, Mitchell E. Chandler, fatally shot a nurse, Douglas Brant, during a home visit to attend to his grandmother.

Another unfortunate incident took place on January 21, 2023, where a 77-year-old man named Jerry Gilland was shot and killed by his wife Ellen, 76, in a Florida hospital. The couple had planned the act weeks prior as Jerry was terminally ill. They both agreed that if his health did not improve, Ellen would end his life.

Ellen went to the hospital, armed with a gun, and shot Jerry in the head. She initially planned to shoot herself too but changed her mind. The police believe the act was premeditated, but are unsure how the gun was brought into the hospital.

Final Thoughts

The recent incident involving Allysa Delvalle serves as an important reminder for companies to address workplace violence.

It is imperative for lawmakers and law enforcement to ensure that healthcare workers receive the protection they deserve.

Far too many incidents of violence against nurses have gone without any ramifications. A case in point is Todd Mason, a nurse battered at work last year. However, his assaulter only to receive a misdemeanor charge instead of the state’s proposed felony.
